you go to the middle of nothing is a vinyl-only release of recent recordings from my studio in London.
‘four hands’ with elsas is a single take freestyle where we are both playing prepared piano at the same time. The hammer of the top note of the piano has snapped off so playing that note creates the distinct percussive and mechanical sound you hear. elsas embracing this sound formed the foundation of the improvisation.
‘was that the last time?’ is me quickly layering takes on the piano via an analogue mixer.
‘time runs like a river’ with Yusu is another single take freestyle where I’m playing the piano and Yu Su is manipulating the sound by running bells along the piano strings.
‘you go to the middle of nothing’ is a track where I play the same note or chord on piano, bamboo saxophone and melody horn. The kind of drone builds a force that piano chords circle around. The title comes from something someone said to us when we told the person at a car rental place where we were going.
The project is about sharing moments in time, shared and alone. Compositionally I’m exploring staying at or close to the same place, finding variation without having to travel as far.
